Shagawa Lake is internationally
known as an EPA National Eutrophication Study lake and in the 1970's
was the EPA's key project for demonstrating how advanced wastewater
treatment for phosphorus removal could restore degraded lakes (Horne
and Goldman 1994; Welch 1992). There is renewed interest in the lake
by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency as an intensive study lake
because it has not recovered as predicted, and since the wastewater
treatment plant now requires upgrading.
