The first
RUSS unit was installed in Ice Lake, April
1998. The second RUSS unit, was deployed in Lake
Independence for the first time on Friday, June 19, 1998. Our third
unit
was installed on Grindstone Lake,
Friday, August 6, 1999. This RUSS was originally intended for Mille
Lacs but a number of logistical concerns led us to a smaller lake. Grindstone
has a number of characteristics that should be of interest to WOW. The
fourth and fifth units are in Lake Minnetonka
and are part of the Lake
Access project. Visit
the St. Louis River to learn about
the site being considered for the sixth RUSS.
We added two new
lakes to the project in 2001. The West Upper unit (Lake Minnetonka)
was moved to Medicine
Lake (near Plymouth, MN) as part of a community experiment to assess
phoshorus runoff in an urban community. The Independence unit went north
to Shagawa Lake in Ely, MN.
